by Brittany Nettles

CENTER CITY EAST

Center City East is a section of Philadelphia between Broad Street to the west, the Delaware River to the east, the Vine Street Expressway to the north, and South Street to the south. This area is broken up further into three smaller neighborhoods: Old City, Society Hill, and Washington Square West.

Let’s take a look at each.

Many would say that living in OLD CITY is like stepping back in time. The neighborhood is steeped in history and boasts beautiful architecture and a thriving art scene. From the cobblestone streets to the historic landmarks, there's always something to explore, especially if you stroll down Market Street.

If you live in Old City you can take advantage of excellent restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, as well as the Delaware River waterfront, where there are often concerts and performances during the summer. Check out Spruce Street Harbor Park for the good food, larger-than-life games, and relaxing hammocks.

Most homes in Old City are row houses, although there are a couple of newer apartment complexes scattered throughout. As of 2022, the median sold price of a home in Old City was $575,000, making it an attractive option for those looking for a charming, historic neighborhood in the heart of the city.

A few blocks south is the small neighborhood of SOCIETY HILL. The area is known for its beautifully preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture (primarily row houses), a myriad of parks and playgrounds, and charming tree-lined streets. You can find restaurants, cafes, and bars all within quick walking distance.

Society Hill is also home to the McCall catchement, which draws families to this neighborhood. As of 2022, the median sold price of a home in Society Hill was $790,000, making it a sought-after neighborhood in Philadelphia.

If we move a few blocks west, we will arrive in WASHINGTON SQUARE WEST. This section of Philadelphia has its own unique charm. Known for its beautiful historic buildings, lively street scenes, and a diverse mix of shops and restaurants, there is always something going on in Washington Square West. It’s a popular spot for locals to relax, catch up with friends, and enjoy live music or events due to its easy walkability to other parts of the city. You will also find an exciting nightlife with a range of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues to choose from.

As of 2022, the median sold price of a home in Washington Square West was $565,000. Whether you're looking for a night out, a place to shop or dine, or simply want to enjoy the city's vibrant energy, Washington Square West has something for everyone.
