Neighborhood Highlight: Cedar Park/Spruce Hill

by Jenn Locke

You know what they say:
West Philly, Best Philly.

Whether or not you believe that to be true, you have to admit it's catchy! Not to mention it’s easy to get caught under the west-is-best spell when you're spending the day in Cedar Park and its neighboring buddy Spruce Hill in West Philly. While these are technically two separate neighborhoods, they both offer a similar nature-filled, friendly, eclectic, and community-oriented vibe that so many love to call home.

Cedar Park lives between 46th and 50th St, with north and south borders between Spruce St and Kingsessing Ave. Spruce Hill is just to the east: 40th St to 46th and spanning Market St down to Woodland Ave. These neighborhoods are home to some of West Philly’s (and all of Philly’s) most beautiful houses. The area previously known as the "streetcar suburbs" feature large, decorative homes with sweeping porches. Contrary to the well-known Philadelphia row home that can be found in many parts of the city, many of these houses are twins. This means only two homes are conjoined, leaving a little space between you and one of your neighbors (the dream!!)

Clark Park is often considered this area's shining star, positioned on 43rd St and Baltimore Ave. Split between two blocks, this park provides the community with a wide green space open to a variety of visitors and activities. There are walking paths, playgrounds, chess boards, and plenty of open spaces to throw a ball around or just lay on a blanket to relax. If you're into people or dog watching, this is going to be a great spot for you to visit! The southern half of the park is home to what is affectionately called "the dog bowl," a large, grassy dip in the park that serves as an unofficial dog park. If a little shopping is more your speed, Clark Park is host to a year-round weekend farmers market and numerous flea markets.

From Clark Park, take a trip down Baltimore Ave and you will get a taste of what this area is really about. Baltimore Avenue is loaded with local businesses: restaurants, shops, cafes… you name it. If you like the charm and personal touch of small business, this area is for you. A few of my personal faves are:

Pop over on a sunny Sunday! Peruse the flea market and check out one of my fave places! I’d love to hear how you liked them.
