Neighborhood Highlight: Pennsport

by Jenn Locke

If you're not well acquainted with South Philly and all its wonders, you might not know one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city. Pennsport is quietly tucked away just south of Queen Village, sandwiched between the scenic Delaware Riverfront and poppin' East Passyunk. If row homes, tree-lined streets, parks, and community are what you're into, you might find yourself right at home here.

Pennsport is most notable as the home of the Mummers and their annual New Year's Day parade. Every year on January 1st, the sleepy neighborhood transforms into nothing short of an over-the-top celebration to ring in the New Year. This party-on-the-move has been a Philadelphia tradition since 1901, starting and ending right on Pennsport's own Two Street (known as S 2nd St for the rest of us Philadelphians). Stick around for the post-parade party!

Enough history--you can't talk about Pennsport without talking about Herman's Coffee... or at least I can't! Just up the block from Two Street is what appears to be an old auto-repair shop surrounded by red lawn chairs (or jawn chairs, IYKYK). Coffee roaster, café, and specialty market, Herman's Coffee, have given a breath of new life into this old garage and it now serves as a community hub. They serve amazing café delights all 7 days of the week while hosting local food trucks and guest chefs on the weekends. Best of all, Herman's Coffee offers that unassuming Philadelphia charm.

Pop by Pennsport the next time you're out and about! Grab yourself a coffee, check out the Mummers Museum, or just relax in Dickinson Square Park. Whatever you do, I'm sure you will be glad you passed through.
