A name that speaks for itself! The Gayborhood is located in Center City, just east of Broad St. and serves as the city's hub and safe space for all things LGBTQ+. This includes nightlife, queer-focused community & health centers, thrift stores, restaurants galore, and of course, rainbow everywhere. This area is also the home to both the Philadelphia Pride celebrations in June as well as October's Outfest, a celebration of National Coming Out Day. In the spirit of Pride, the city recently repainted crosswalks in the gayborhood with the colors of the progress pride flag (the traditional rainbow plus the colors of the trans flag, and brown & black to highlight the importance of intersectionality and racial equity within the community). This fresh paint pairs well with the rainbow that lines the bottom of street signs throughout the Gayborhood which were dedicated in 2007. As a Gay™️ myself, I've spent my fair share of time in and around the Gayborhood and have gathered together a list of my personal favorite spots:
Food: Pizzeria Cappelli (AKA Homo Hut) - Late night pizza, often a savior after a night out. Gorgio on Pine - BYOB Pasta spot that is a must-visit! Monster Vegan - An 80's horror themed vegan restaurant with immaculate vibes and even better food. Not just for vegans!
Nightlife: Tabu Sports Bar - For sports, drag events, or just a strong drink on a rooftop bar. Tavern on Camac - A classic. Who doesn't love a good piano bar? Cockatoo - A newer bar on the scene with great ambiance and a retractable roof!
Spots Just Worth Mentioning Philly AIDS Thirft @ Giovanni's Room - "The oldest & very best LGBTQ & feminist bookstore in the country!" William Way Community Center - THE place for queer social groups, networking events, counseling and support services, art exhibitions and cultural experiences and so much more. Truly a blessing to the community.
